Rediscovering Raw Danger

Raw Danger

Ok I must admit, I haven’t yet made the jump to a next-gen platform as of yet for a few reasons, and one of those reasons is simply the fact I’m still enjoying my catalog of PS2 games immensely. Although I’m an artist, I still hold game play and good design higher than graphics by a fair margin. I appreciate great game play over graphics anyday.

At this point I have a hefty backlog of games I’ve yet to play, and some still even in their original wrapper! So a couple days ago I plucked the very underrated game Raw Danger from my closet and popped it in, as I’m a sucker for natural disaster type movies I must say I have never had so much fun not shooting or killing anything but still having to fight for my life, while making instinctive decisions that truly change the course of the game, genius! And what’s funny is just a few days ago I was speaking with my wife about how great it was back in the day when choose your own adventure books were all the rage (funny how these topics just seem to come about when you have kids!) and how I missed that type of adventure experience. What I didn’t know was I had this gem sitting in a box waiting to be discovered. Now keep in mind the title is low budget and it won’t win any technical awards. The graphics, voice acting and animation are poor at best, but that’s not important here, if you can look past the aforementioned issues, you will be in for a fun-filled adventure. One can only imagine what IREM software will do with a next-gen console and a larger budget. We may not have to wait long to find out however {upcoming ps3 title}

I love the idea that making choices throughout the game truly determines the course of your adventure and leads to different endings or situations, in turn making the replay value very high, and even though the initial thrill will be subdued the next time around, curiosity will get the better of you when you begin to question the other choices you didn’t make at the time. That’s how Choose your own adventure books worked for me, so I was excited at this implementation.

Raw Danger has been in the bargain bin for sometime, so I highly recommend you pick it up and give it a go for yourself.

They’re some excellent design choices in this title, maybe I can implement them somehow on a lesser extent hmm.
