PS3 without HDTV! The nerve you say, but rest assure I’m not referring to the use of a standard television set. Having made the successful leap to a ‘next-gen’ console with the purchase of my PS3 a week ago, I plan to continue with a Xbox 360 in a few months, and if I can find one a Wii! And even though it’s not as vitally bad an experience some would lead you to believe, a small 20′ SDTV screen and s-video cables will get your gaming on, which is by far more important
. However, having said that I knew I was missing something far superior that only an HD screen could grant me.
Due to my current situation I was unable to hook up my new PS3 to my beloved Samsung 42″ DLP HDTV tele, and as previously mentioned was reduced to playing it on a standard 20″ Apex through s-video cables’ for shame! Now to be fair playing PS3/Xbox 360 on a standard set isn’t all that bad, granted the fact that you’re using s-video cables and not the supplied composite cables you received with your PS3. The ‘next-gen’ experience was definitely there just not as smooth and bleeding edge as it should be. Realizing this I sought out ways to get my PS3 on my only HD display in my room, and since I didn’t want to spend needless money on a new HDTV set it was an obvious choice and thankfully a much cheaper alternative to connect the PS3 to my PC monitor which can easily handle 720p. So what do you need to do if you’re in my situation? Follow these simple steps to HD gaming bliss.
This tutorial is for LCD displays, but the same can be done with CRT monitors but with more expense since you will need to purchase a component to VGA box and component cables (which I will explain in an upcoming article). And just to let you be aware, Sony hasn’t released a similar VGA cable that Microsoft so gracefully did, which would make this entire process much simpler, but I digress.
10 steps to HD Bliss
- 1. Be sure that your particular model is HDCP compliant (it actually needs to state this
) if it’s not then the PS3 will not show up on your screen simply because it uses Blu-ray disks which are HDCP enabled. - 2. Pick up an HDMI to DVI cable for no more than $10 or less because anything above isn’t necessary to get your gaming on, especially since you won’t be setting up your PS3 across the room.
- 3. You will need your original PS3 cables (yes they have some use) for audio along side with y-adapter or cable to convert from RCA red and white to a 3.5mm female input. You might have a tough time finding that particular adapter/cable around so you will need to purchase one with a 3.5mm male plug which can be purchased from any electronics retailer such as Radio Shack/The Source for no more that $7 or less. (You may also need a female coupler to plug in your headphones or PC speakers which I’ve done and that will cost around $3)
- 4. Once you’re setup and ready to go, plug your composite yellow video cable into a standard television and your HDMI to DVI cable from your PS3 to your monitor.
- 5. Browse to display settings from you PS3 xmb (cross media bar) and choose HDMI as your output.
- 6. Click right on your controller once and your SDTV should go blank
- 7. Immediately unplug your yellow composite cable and switch your monitor’s source to digital output if it wasn’t already, you should now see the PS3 xmb on your monitor yay!
- 8. Choose the resolution your monitor supports, which is usually up to 720p (1280×720) for 20′ or less monitors. If you have a monitor that supports resolutions up to 1920×1080 then you can select 1080i/1080p as well. If your monitor doesn’t support this resolution you will receive an ‘out of range’ error if applied. If that happens wait for 30secs and your PS3 will revert back to the last working display.
- 9. Now since HDMI carries sound and DVI does not, you’ll need to switch your audio source back to A/V multi in your sound settings>audio output settings as it was switched to HDMI by default
- 10. You can now plug your headphones or speakers into the y-cable setup you assembled earlier and you should now be sound enabled. You can also avoid the previous step if you use an optical output, but you will need an audio receiver around.
That’s basically all that needs to be done, it take a few minutes providing you have everything you need and it’s worth the effort since it will save you hundreds of dollars on purchasing a new HDTV. And between you and me, the monitor is still superior to many expensive television sets out there

I tried to follow your steps exactly but when i connect the HDMI to DVI cable into my monitor it displays an error message “out of range”. I have no idea why because i am sure i did everything correctly. I heard it may be a problem with HDCP but i dont even know what that is! and i am being forced to play my PS3 on an old 24″ tv using the composite cable. although i am desperate to view in full HD.
If it helps my monitor is an Advent 19″ wide lcd monitor (i checked the manual but it says nothing about HDCP)
Hiya Steve, what’s the model of your monitor? As for your “out of range” error that has to do with your monitors resolution cap. If you’re trying to output say a 1080i/p resolution and your monitor only supports 720p (1280 720) you will get this error. Generally monitors 24″ and up will support 1080p resolutions natively.

Hi….I decided to go for the gusto, and try this….And, to my dismay….It didn’t work….And my Monitor is Vista compliant (says so on the box, and the sticker that is on the monitor) It’s not a high quality monitor….I payed like 200.00$ for it, and it is from Staples…..The model number is:sp9106r. And it’s a Styaples brand monitor. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, did everything to the “T”. If you could offer any help on this, It would be so appreciated!!!
Hiya Stephen, I’m sorry but I can’t find anything on your monitor, but it is indeed a Staples brand monitor, looking at the specs on the only monitor listed on their site it appears it’s not HDCP compliant. HDCP compliance is an essential feature and your PS3 will not display without it, I should actually omit the “Vista compatible” line from number 1 since it can be confusing.
Return the monitor and by a brand name instead if you can afford it.
Good luck!
Hi, do you know if a 22″ (1680×1050) looks any good? I think it might downscale to 720p or 1050p.
Hiya Andy, yes it looks great and you are correct, but you won’t get 1080p with that resolution unless your monitor has a built in upscaler. The most you will get is 1080i (1366 x 768) if you’re lucky. Although TRUE HD resolutions for 1080i/p is 1920×1080. To my knowledge 1050p isn’t supported by most games if any. I would have to research that.
Take care,

Hi! I have acer x222w i can play games on the PS3 and every thing but i don’t get any sound?
can you help me
Hiya Sindri, follow steps 9 & 10. But to summarize it, you will have to use the supplied A/V multi cable that came with your PS3 (white + red) plug that in and switch your sound from HDMI back to the default.
Good luck
Great Info! Thanks for the post
hi. thanks for your advise. Now the only problem is trying to change the settings of the PS3 to display 720p. because when i change the settings to HD on my PS3 it no longer displays through the composite and my monitor gives me the error message. so i either have to connect my PS3 to another tv or monitor that supports 1080i and change the settings or change the settings “blindly” without a monitor to see anything. seeing as i dont have another tv or monitor i am forced to do it blindly, trouble is i dont know which buttons to press. If anyone could post which buttons they press after changing from composite to HD to change the settings to 720p i would greatly appreciate it.
Hi again …Ileft ya a thing before…I had a staples monitor. Went and bought an HP w2207h 22 inch wide screen monitor. I use a HDMI cable for it @ 1080i res. Problem is, the colors aren’t as bright as on a tv. Am I doing somthing wrong? I just want HD without the cost….Any help would be appreciated.
Hiya Stevefoxy, have you tried just holding down the power button until it beeps twice? The PS3 should reset and enable the appropriate settings for you.
To Stephen P, I don’t believe you’re doing anything wrong, you monitor should have different display modes (such as dynamic, standard e.t.c) to cycle through like a TV, try that. Also enable superwhite and full RGB in the PS3 display settings. Hope that works for ya.
~t
Yes, holding down the power button resets the settings for the composite but i want it to be displayed through the HDMI cable at 720p not 1080 because my monitor cannot handle that and it won’t display it. If i take the composite out and use the HDMI cable the settings are set at displaying in full 1080 HD.
The only thing i need is a list of which buttons to press after turning on the PS3 to change HD settings from 1080i to 720p.
Hi again….usin a straight hdmi to my monitor….looks all jagged and just not good, on any setting. would a sony hdmi cord be better for gaming My monitor is a HP w2207h 22 inch monitor. Any help would be appreciated….Keep up the great work!!!
Hiya Steve, not sure what the button sequence would be, but I’m sure a google search can hone in on it. Just to let you know, I’ve only had to do this a couple times, usually resetting the system with HDMI works fine for me here.
Stephen nope a Sony labeled hdmi cord won’t necessarily help your cause depending on the issue. I’ve found that a $5 HDMI cord works just as well as an expensive brand. By jagged, do you mean the text or just everything in general? Would be great to see a pic.
Good luck
Hello, I was wondering if you could possibly tell me how to hook my PS3 up to a “HP p920″, it’s a CRT monitor, and i’m not very good with cables and such.
Thanks!
-Jon
Hiya Jon, I haven’t done it myself but it’s essentially the same process as explained above. The only issue I foresee is not being able to switch your monitor back for PC use without some sort of switch. Otherwise enjoy your hi-def gaming (albiet in 4:3 ratio
)
Everything looks jagged….And light in color…..Hard to explain….I’d take a pic, but my cam is broke!!!! I just want the best picture i can possibly get with what I got, and try not to spend more money. Text and graphically, all is jagged….Just gettin abit flustered. Any solutions?
For the “light in color” try enabling full RGB settings in display and play with SuperWhite. The only thing with the jaggies I can recommend without seeing it is to be sure your resolution isn’t 480p. Your monitor is actually pretty good. Maybe it’s the hdmi feed on your monitor’s end? Try using a HDMI to DVI converter like above and see what happens. Those are under $5 OEM
Good luck!
I tried re-setting it countless times but its no use. I did hours of pouring through google and other sites trying to find the button sequence but it was no use, so i guess im stuck with composite =[
Hmmm, the only other thing I would try is disabling 1080p in the PS3 settings all together. Have you tried that? Sorry you’re having so much trouble, it shouldn’t be this picky
Hi there,
I am planning to get a monitor to play my Ps3 with. I maybe getting it next month. Would this monitor display a great image with my ps3? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=159159921 and how will I get sounds through it? Do I have to use the composite cables? And is this the cable you need? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=164903430
Thank you very much and I appreciate your help.
I live in New Zealand so prices aren’t under $5 here. So will it work?
Thanks
Will it display a 720p image? thanks for your help in advance
Hi there, so you confirm that it will work?
Hiya Lee, yes that monitor will give you a pretty good image at 720p. And you will need to follow steps 9-10 above for your sound.
Good luck!
Hey, thanks for that I appreciate it…. I found an adapter for the sounds..
Uhm, will the image stretch or will it have a “black bar” on the top and the bottom because from what I heard, when you play your Ps3 with monitor the image stretches?
Are those true or not?
Thanks again
Hold on, I just found another monitor, http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=164778564 I have checked on the AOC website and they say that the AOC 2216VW is HDCP ready. http://www.i-tech.com.au/products/25324_AOC_2216VW_22__WIDE_BLK_5MS_DVI_HDCP.aspx
So will it also work on my Ps3 and what resolution will it bring? 720p?
Thank
you
Your image shouldn’t distort as all they monitors you’re wondering about supports 16:9 ratio which is PS3′s native. If on the other hand you have an 80gb sku and plan on playing certain ps2 titles that don’t support 16:9 aspect ratio, the image will distort.
Thanks for that so do you confirm that my Ps3 will work on this monitor?
http://www.i-tech.com.au/products/25324_AOC_2216VW_22__WIDE_BLK_5MS_DVI_HDCP.aspx
Ok, so I bought a AOC 2216Vw monitor yesterday which supports HDCP and has a DVI input.
And I also bought a DVI-HDMI cable, I know how to run the sounds because I already have the adapters to connect to my Logitech speakers.
So can I ask how good will the graphics display on my monitor? 720p right? my monitor is 1680×1050 maximum resolution .
I wanna know if the image will be stretched ( how bad will it be? ) or will it have the black bars on top and bottom?
And can I play Blu-ray movies on AOC 2216Vw monitor as well as Ps3 games?
Hey congrats Lee on the purchase.
To answer your questions if you don’t know by the time you’ve read this… your max resolution would be 720p and all PS3 games will fill the screen with no distortion (well not to the naked eye) and depending on the DVD you may get small black bars but shouldn’t with Blu-ray. If you can see your PS3 XMB, you can view anything on your monitor
So enjoy!

Hey lildragon,
yeah thanks, the monitor looks pretty sweet and it’s 22″!!
I haven’t played games on it yet though because I’m still waiting for my HDM – DVI cable to arrive.
720p will be sweet as for me
, because I’m really not looking for 1080p because at 22″, no one really can’t tell the difference.
And I heard that only 24″ monitors has 1080p.
But yeah 720p will be brilliant for me.
I will tell you once my HDMI-DVI cable arrive and once I can play my Ps3 on my monitor.
Again, many thanks
Hi
So I got the DVI-HDMI cable today and I am running it at 1080i and it’s awesome!!!
I thank you for giving me this idea of buying a monitor instead of spending thousands of dollars in a HDTV.
Thanks lildragon
Hey good stuff, glad I can help, and 1080i? Great, I know some lcds can’t handle 1080i, so that’s good news. Enjoy!
Yes 1080i, but I think at 22″, even if my monitor could handle 1080p I don’t think I could tell the difference between 1080p and 720p let’s say.
But if I had a bigger screen then I maybe can tell the difference.
But 22″ is sweet for me and even 19″ is alright for me.
Anyways, thanks
Add me on Playstation Network ( PSN ) if you wish.
PSN name: micro_soft
Lee, with that setup is your screen filled completely or does it black bars at the top and bottom. If it’s filled completely, does the image looked stretched vertically? TIA.
Hi jsmitty, it doesn’t have the black bars on top and bottom..
It is filled completely with no vertical stretched image…

Seventhsin, I hope you sell your monitor so you can play in HD.
GOODLUCK!
And lildragon, you’re a very helpful guy
Cheers guys! It’s a pleasure. And seventhsin best of luck bud, going the monitor route is still the cheapest way atm. I’m sure ebay or craigslist would net descent results.

how do you switch your monitor’s source to digital output
What resolution is better? 1080i or 720p?
Because people say 720p is better because 1080i is using half of the lines ( Something like that )
lildragon I have been recommending you to a lot of people to view your site to help them
Keep up the GOOD WORK!
Hiya again peeps, I was trying to remember to alternatives I ran across awhile back, and finally found the links again. Now these cost a bit more $$$ but should work with any monitor (yes even non-HDCP complaint models
) Both boast 1080p output.

PS3-USER-93 – you should have a “source” button on your monitor close to the others.
Traveler 09 – heh that question has a very lengthy answer, I suggest some googling with give you the in-depth answer you want. But as a note Progressive is better than interlaced.
Lee- thx much for your support, appreciated!

hi i have this type of monitor Acer P223Wwd 22″ Widescreen LCD Monitor – 5ms, 1680×1050 (WSXGA+), 2500:1 ACM, VGA, DVI with HDCP, Silver/White
will it work?
Hi Juan,
Yes your monitor should be able to work because its HDCP.
That’s the key to play your Ps3 in your monitor.
And just follow the instructions for sounds from above made by our very helpful guy lildragon
