In my recent review of Game Design: Principles, Practice, and Techniques, I briefly mentioned my interests in turning a short story I had in mind into a game prototype that will act as a proof of concept.
Today I would like to officially announce that I have begun development on Essentia (working title & logo), and will be updating The Career Gamer over the development cycle outlining all aspects of the creation along with providing tips/tutorials and giveaways while keeping the story intact so to not ruin the experience once the playable demo is released. The prototype has a generous timeline, as I will be pre-occupied with other duties throughout that time. More details are forthcoming.
So as my first official blog entry on Essentia, I would like to mention some of the preliminary facts.
Essentia will be an action/adventure title with an emphasis on stylized melee and magical combat set in a post apocalyptic steam punk style world. My intention is to not make a casual game as it is coming from a short film idea, so there will be a slightly deep story pushing it forward. Initially I’m aiming for a polished single level demo, which I can use as a proof of concept as previously mentioned.
The engine used will not be created by myself, as I’m an artist first and programmer umm’ well let’s just say I’m not a programmer
But thankfully I’ve brought Unity3D into my pipeline and will be utilizing this engine to it’s fullest. Yes coding will still be needed, but it’s quite easy to learn to speak to the engine when you properly apply yourself. So with that said, here’s the preliminary story synopsis that will indefinitely change overtime.
Essentia tells a tale of the plight of Flo, a young heroine along with her always thinking counterpart as they take up a fight against an unknown foe that has plunged their planet into darkness. The story unfolds as Flo unravels the mystery that is within her and the planet in which she resides. You will join Flo in an immersive story, as she discovers the truth behind her planets demise and her unique powers that will allow her to end the problem once and for all.
It’s rough around the edges but will be smoothed over in the months to come. I’m very excited about this title, as I believe it will bring something new to the genre. But you will be the judge of that!
Until next update.
